while unpacking from the last move (to LA. i’m not sure if i ever mentioned here that we moved from san francisco to los angeles at the beginning of june!), i noticed that a lot of my dresses are black, which is no surprise for most women, but the next biggest color is navy. i’m not sure why navy over, say, grey, which i would think is the next common neutral. but it seems that i’m not done w/navy. there’s a new dress out at free people that i saw first in ivory, and thought was nice, but then saw the navy and i swooned. all the curlicues on the white seems too close to bridal but on the navy they pop more! i’m not sure if it’ll be flattering on my figure at all, but i like it!

i went shopping a couple weeks ago with a new friend from france and i didn’t realize it, but apparently i felt every piece of leather clothing we came across. she asked me if i liked leather and i responded that i did. that’s when she pointed out my touchy feely habit. how weird that i never noticed! i love the idea of wearing leather clothing (not all at once though) but i always hesitate from pulling the trigger on a purchase because not only are they a serious wallet investment, but i feel like they make a serious statement about your personality. that’s right, personality, not just style…which granted, are intertwined but i don’t necessarily think my love of lace says much about my personality. but leather- leather is just so primal! it says, “i’m raw, i’m badass, i’m hardcore, so deal with me or leave me alone, bitches.” and i want to be that person. maybe i’ll grow into that person, but up until now leather clothing just hasn’t quite suited me. even this awesome vegan “leather” shirt gives me pause! i think the model looks relaxed and just a lil badass (i should be able to pull that much off, right?!) but the thought of actually incorporating it into my wardrobe scares me! oy!
le sigh. you know, i didn’t even own a proper leather jacket until a year or two ago! i guess until i can manage to grow a pair, leather shoes will have to suffice. these jeffrey campbells are no slouch in making up for my wussiness! i generally like to save any clear plastic bits on shoes for pole, but i really like the idea of this floating gladiator look. and i’m not sure exactly what it is about the cutout in the wedge, but there’s something different about it than most other cutouts that i like. i usually don’t appreciate that bit of open sole but it works on this shoe.

eh. it’s been a few days since fp movement debuted and i’ve been letting it sink in to see if my feelings changed over time. but alas, no. i was more excited for the free people yoga collabo with solow than was warranted. how disappointing! there’s maybe a dozen pieces to the line in a couple different pastel shades, mostly in fleece. i don’t know…i just wanted…more! i’m not sure exactly what i wanted more of but i guess it’s a lot more practical than i had hoped. i get it, they wanted to make something that was functional for yoga but does it really have to be reduced to relatively plain pieces with tie dye as the most spice to the line? le sigh. i kind of like this one sports bra. not enough to run out and get it now. like maybe if it was on sale in a couple months, i might try it on and see what’s what. i actually like the fishnet racer back bra a lot more except the weird texture on the boobs that you can see in the non-black colorways.

can i already be nostalgic over my wedding that was only a lil over seven months ago? apparently so! free people has a body con dress w/lace sleeves and an open back, much like my wedding dress did (though my sleeves were cap, not 3/4 length). come to think of it, i really should try to get more use out of that nubra i bought for my wedding. that does it, for the sake of making my nubra an economic purchase, i must get this free people dress! all in favor?
p.s. one of my wedding colors was navy, so the fact that this dress comes in navy on makes it more perfect!

i need some free people in my atmosphere!
it’s gotten fairly chilly here in san francisco and i stared into my closet the other day to figure out how i used to stay warm in seattle without wearing sweatshirts everyday. somehow i was staring right through my sweater stack. i have no idea why. but it made me realize that with the exception of a hoodie, i haven’t really had to anything to the keep-me-warm section of my wardrobe. as it’s now more than half way through january, that’s not too bad, huh? (just to be clear, the growth of my wardrobe is a function of the passage of time, not its current contents.) however, with that realization came an itch to add a lil sumthin’ sumthin’ and i found it at free people.
i’m not sure why they call this a cropped sweater because i’m assuming that the model is 5’9″+ and it looks like it could be pulled down to the top of her hips. it looks cozy without being overly bulky, kinda sexy/playful with the off the shoulder action, but i think the horizontal ribbing really makes it because it’s that one unexpected touch that makes me go, “ooooh”. the only downside i see with this sweater is that it only comes in grey and a darkish blue. i feel like ALL of my sweaters are either charcoal or heather grey! and i have often been falling into the trap of wearing navy tops with dark denim and justifying it away as a “monochromatic look” instead of admitting that really i’m just lazy. not that i have any particular color i’d like to see it in instead. maybe cream and that’s really not that much more interesting than grey, is it?

i just got the free people holiday catalog and i want everything in the first third of it! it’s all so glittery and ruffly and lacy…le sigh. i envy how easily these models wear layer upon frothy layer. with me i feel like if i hit 2 layers i’m already the michelin man, much less adding socks over tights under boots with a hoodie under a blazer and a scarf…all additions to a skirt and tank under a dress. oy! oh well, let the girliness begin!

i continue to profess my longing for spring but it seems that my palette is still somewhat dour. i want to transition to lightweight fabrics but haven’t found a ton in light or bright colors that are equally appealing. these two tops are perfect examples (granted the all saints tee only comes in black but their entire color palette is pretty neutral) of what i’m talking about.
fyi- all saints is offering free shipping on all us orders. take advantage while you can. i know i will be.

two pieces in the new free people catalog caught my eye, a faux corset tank and a cute lbd by nicholas k that i think will confuse me when i pull it on but is still pretty. behold.

this is perhaps the least lingerie-y lace piece of clothing ever, which is a good thing because it means it’s totally wearable! on the free people site, it comes in red and black as well, but i favor this demure nude color even though i’m not sure i could personally pull off (will it blend in too much with my skin tone, etc?). it’s also purposefully loose fitting to help reduce the skank factor and the large flower pattern in the lace is girly without being too cloying. i wonder if that birthday promo code free people sent me ever expires…

mayhaps not quite one ring to rule them all but is definitely eye-catching enough to rule me. oh, free people and your extremes of awesomeness and absolute ludicrousness.
