  1. it’s the most wonderful time of the year

    December 29, 2009 by thelillinator

i’ve got The Boyfriend so i don’t need any mistletoe-ing, but it’s time for all the after christmas sales! here’s a quick and dirty on what i’m looking into right now:

    1. completely brilliant (i forgot i had this idea at about the same time last year)- get uggs in big kid sizes! case in point, the navy and cream striped scuffettes i’ve been eyeing since the ugg fall campaign was released in late summer. i just got some nordstrom notes in the mail (we’ll not discuss how many nordstrom notes there were and therefore how many actual money i had to spend to earn them), but getting these slippers for about $20 less just for getting it in a different department? yes please!

    2. i recently attempted the over the knee boot despite my misgivings on how it will look on my frame. since i had similar misgivings on skinny jeans and have since found a way to make it work, i thought i may as well try the otk. well, my first foray sucked. i went super cheap at forever 21 so i wouldn’t feel as bad if it didn’t work. they actually didn’t look a quarter bad, but they were. so. noisy. back they went and in turn, i kept on searching for an entry otk boot. i think i found it in the restricted vamp boot! i like the taupe color because it’s not quite brown/tan nor is it grey (even though i still want a pair of grey boots). living in seattle, i normally avoide suede, but since this isn’t an investment piece, i don’t feel that bad.

    3. there are these schuler and sons wedges at the anthropologie downtown that i’ve been eyeing since at least september, if not earlier than that and i just called the store yesterday and they’re STILL not on sale! wtf? what does it take for something to get marked down? i mean, they still have my size so it doesn’t seem like the product is moving. je ne comprends pas! in any case, they’re pretty so i want to show them off in case in a moment of weakness i buy them anyways.

    4. hautelook is featuring radcliffe jeans for the next day or so. i discovered this british brand a couple of years ago. their niche in the marketplace is for those of us who hate having to buy two pair so of the same jeans so we can have a long version for heels and a short version for flats. radcliffes actually come long enough for heels and have cleverly hidden little holes where camouflaged cufflinks can help you insta-hem your jeans! i’ve not bought the pair of primrose hill bootcuts (ignore how they’re styled) they have quite yet because hautelook is going to have a michael stars sale starting tomorrow and every now and again i find something i like from that line. i can’t be spending all my money on shipping all the time now, can i?

    5. urban outfitters is currently having an insane sale where a good portion of their denim selection is only $39. even though skinny jeans have stuck around the past few years and don’t seem to be fading away any time soon, i refuse to spend too much on clothes that just do not absolutely flatter me, so this deal is right up my alley. i especially like the silence and noise lace ripped twig jean, which is exactly what it sounds like: a merging of the destroyed trend with the fancy lace trend. love it! i also am somewhat reluctantly jumping on the denim legging (more commonly known as the “jegging”- please, kill me now) bandwagon. i’m sorry, but i do not have skinny calves. i wouldn’t go so far as to say they’re fat or even athletic, and i by no means have cankles, but if i want to tuck a pair of jeans into boots, i need some damn thin material to do so! enter the denim leggings. i have one pair i bought in bp for around $40, so this pair of bdgs for only $39 seems reasonable.

    6. so let me mention again that i’m taking a pole dancing class. i love it. i love that now i get to wear shoes and, if i do say so myself, i’ve probably got the most varied shoe wardrobe that i’ve seen at the studio yet. they all don’t have to be clear platforms, ladies! bordello by pleaser has a nice model called the teeze (with many iterations, i.e. teeze 31g or teeze 07) with the hidden platform so it’s just a lil less stripper than what you might have expected. for a class i go to twice a week, i already have four pairs of shoes (five counting the pair that some one randomly just gave me), so i’m sure i don’t need actually need another…but 20% off…and baby pink…and a mary jane…? how can i resist?

what is the point of these ultra fancy knives? i assume these are not cheese knives where the extra holes/engraved areas are supposed to help cut things.

i really own only 2 plaid shirts. i know that’s not a lot, but i guess i’m afraid that since plaid is pretty distinctive i don’t want to go overboard with incorporating more pieces into my wardrobe. my shirts both have features designed to soften the masculine pattern- one is an elizabeth and james top cut in their schoolboy style with the buttons up the back to cinch in the waist. the others is a red buffalo plaid tunic with a tuxedo bib and empire waist from urban outfitters.

in my head, another plaid practically puts me into that midlife crisis mode where you try to recapture your youth, and really, do i want people to think that grunge was the high point of my youth? i also want to avoid androgenizing my already not-especially-curvy (as in feminine, not euphemism for fat) frame.

this vince shirt is a unique enough offering that i think i can get away with another plaid top. after all, how often do you see a drapey, feminine detail like a cowl neck on something as butch as a plaid button up? i don’t really like how the top is styled on the shopbop detail page with the collar open instead of buttoned up into the cowl, but this picture from their winter lookbook really hooked me. still though, i pause. the $200+ price tag doesn’t help either. maybe if it goes on sale enough it’ll convince me to get over my lil stigma.

  5. i took that a lil too far

ever since finding the jeffrey campbell ibiza in canada (the shoe i couldn’t buckle for the life of me), i’ve become slightly obsessed with procuring myself a pair of jeffrey campbells. i don’t blame it all on the land of the maple leaf; a coworker of mine has a really cute but somewhat subdued pair of jeffrey campbell heels. well, today i discovered the existence of the posh2, which is all hardcore with chains and ropes of crystals, but i discovered it much like paleontologists discovered dinosaurs- just a lil too late. they’re on sale everywhere, but all that’s left is 8.5s! to carry on my scientific metaphor, the posh2 is an evolved ibiza. instead of the chinese finger trap that is the stupid buckle on the ibiza, the posh2 has a ZIPPER up the back for easier access! evolution is awesome.

anyways, i did manage to find a distant relative of the posh2 and ibiza (this metaphor thing is fun!). it seems to have adapted to colder climates by developing a closed toe and heel and an appendage that encircles the calf. the telltale mark that these boots are of the same ilk as the warm weather ibiza and posh2 is the studded strap that laces all the way up the back of the boot. hot.ness.

okay, i’ve run out of creativity to carry on the metaphor. that and going any further with it is just dumb.

  6. ingenious

this past week gilt has offered two different versions of what will be, if it isn’t already, the essential glove for the 21st century. in the day of touch screen phones and high temperatures hovering just above freezing, staying in touch and avoiding frost bite are no longer mutually exclusive! some clever designers have come up with gloves that either have slits in the pointer fingertip and thumbtip (carolina amato‘s holed it glove) or, à la the cutoff finger glove/mitten, gloves with “hooded” pointer finger and thumb tips (girl 32‘s smart glove) so you can keep them warm or take them out to be dexterous as needed. i LOVE this! what i do not love is the fact that i’ve been so busy with the damn day job lately that i’ve missed out on the chance to capitalize on either of these sales. by the time i log on all the good colors are gone. boo hiss. i am strongly considering buying them full price but smart design does not come cheap. :(

so let’s say i do capitulate and pay full retail (gasp!)…which do you think? cold weather favorite carolina amato in classic grey or black or forward thinking girl 32 in cable knit snow or black (on gilt, they had a black and white stripe that i prefer but i do not see it on their site…nor a way to actually buy their goods)? i do have to say that girl 32 has a certain appeal- their design acumen is not limited to gloves. they also have scarves with pockets(!) to hold your credit card/id/phone and a patented ponytail knit hat. it’s like the ponytail through a baseball hat meets beanie with a lil bling thrown in (swarovski crystal buttons go up and down the back of the beanie so you can open up a lil hole at whatever height your ponytail happens to be at). good in theory; not sold on it in reality but i definitely like where they’re going with all of their functional fashion accessories.

one time i went to a mariner’s game. i knew i wasn’t going to have that much fun watching the game so i thought that i should have some liquid enjoyment to keep my occupied. not wanting to spend exhorbitant amounts of money on mike’s, wine, or beer (gag) to achieve a blissful state, i managed to sneak in a couple airplane sized bottles of rum to mix into the coke i bought at the stadium. but i only managed to have a good time because of those lil bottles. i have a flask in my car (bad i know, i know) but i never actually bring it out because what if security somewhere makes me toss it out and waste all that precious alcohol? well restoration hardware, of all places, has managed to make this a non-issue with their disposable flask. get caught sneaking a lil sippy sippy in and have to leave it behind? oh well, even though it sucks to be deprived of the ambrosia that leads to drunkenness, at least you’ll only be out $5+alcohol.
